travellers began without a plan. during a series of spontaneous painting sessions, i created hundreds of small works, experimenting with ink, movement, texture and chance. somewhere among them, figures began to appear. i started noticing little beings emerging from the abstract shapes. some seemed to carry things, some appeared dressed for places i couldn’t quite locate. they felt weathered, curious, familiar and strange at the same time. like travellers from different parts of this world, or perhaps from somewhere just outside of it.
i never deliberately painted one of them. they simply appeared among everything else. only a small number of paintings from those sessions became travellers, and i don’t know whether there will ever be more. it isn’t a series i can continue on command. i have to wait for them to show themselves again.
