Contemporary Noir

abstract blackwork & contemporary tattoo art

contemporary noir is my first signature series and the work i consider the clearest expression of my visual language. there is no story behind it. no symbolism, no hidden meaning, nothing the viewer is supposed to recognize or decode. the work is purely abstract.

everything depends on composition: the relationship between black and empty space, heavy and delicate elements, control and movement. a shape can feel wrong by a few millimetres. a dark area can carry too much weight. a line can interrupt the flow instead of continuing it. i work on these compositions until that balance feels exactly right. when they become tattoos, the body enters that composition. the designs often wrap around an arm or leg, not because i established this as a rule for the series, but because the work naturally developed in that direction. the composition moves around the body rather than existing as a flat image placed onto it. parts appear and disappear as the body turns, changing the work depending on where it is seen from.

the series has continued to evolve, but its foundation has remained remarkably consistent: dark and light, restraint and movement, and the pursuit of a composition that needs no explanation to feel complete.
